PROJECT NARRATIVE

In the late 1980’s, Allegheny and Piedmont Airlines were in the process of merging to become U.S. Air. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority was starting the process of planning and designing Terminal B & C at National Airport. Ed Colodny, President of U.S. Air reached out to Giuliani Associates to develop a solution for a temporary facility to house the combined operations while the Authority designed and built Terminal B & C. The Solution Giuliani Associates developed, reconfigured Hangar 11 as an interim terminal and moved US Air’s maintenance operations to Hangar 12. The existing structures were WPA era hangars. This was taken into account as the design solution was developed. Hangar doors and windows that were removed for the transition to the interim terminal were stored for replacement when the building was converted back to a maintenance hangar. The building was modified to utilize the hangar for ticketing and bag claim while an addition to the hangar allowed for a concourse, club and concessions. The project won several DC A.I.A. awards.
