Hensel Phelps, Orlando, Fla., was awarded the $32,450,000 / 104,000SF design-build contract for the new MH-47 Aviation Maintenance Hangar at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Construction will be performed in Fort Campbell, KY with a Spring 2014 completion. The Hensel Phelps design team partners include Giuliani Associates Architects, Inc.
Project Description: The 104,000 SF hangar complex includes a 28-feet high hangar bay with 130-feet long-span trusses to accommodate three Special Operations Forces MH47 Helicopters, along with a two-story support area with associated maintenance, operations, labs, storage, private offices and open administrative spaces. The project also includes a 374,000 SF aircraft parking apron, taxiway access, a tactical air navigation system facility, roadways, on-site parking and other site improvements.
The exterior character of the building conforms to the Fort Campbell Base Installation Design Guide: cavity wall construction with a split face CMU exterior of light integral color to complement adjacent buildings. All windows exceed ASHRAE 90.1 standards and meet the anti-terrorism / force protection requirements of Department of Defense Standard UFC 04-010-01. Six individually-operated hangar doors clad in pre-finished steel panels provide access for the aircraft; enclosed outriggers allow the entire 210 feet of the apron face of the hangar to be open for aircraft maneuvering. To provide daylighting in the hangar bay area, the building design includes thirty-six 36-SF skylights with automatic black-out shades mounted on the roof. The low-slope roof is covered with pre-finished standing-seam metal panels; drainage is provided by exterior gutters and downspouts tied into an underground storm drainage system.
Hangar bay finishes include full-height CMU walls with high-performance paint, painted exposed roof structure, and three-coat fuel-resistive resinous flooring system. Finishes in support areas include gypsum board on steel studs with lay-in acoustical ceilings in offices and personnel convenience areas, and painted CMU walls and open ceilings in shops and maintenance areas. Finishes throughout have been selected for durability and ease of maintenance.
Special equipment includes a 10-ton bridge crane; special interior construction includes a paint booth. The hangar bay is protected by an aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) fire suppression system integrated into the building structure. In addition to standard electrical and telecom rooms, two SIPR NET rooms are provided.
Sustainable features include a rainwater harvesting system and solar panels for heating domestic water. Based on EPACT ’05 criteria, an overall energy savings of 50% is anticipated as the result of the following features: highly efficient HVAC system, thermally improved exterior envelope, high-output lighting fixtures with daylighting harvesting controls, and overall building-wide controls system.
